The Managing Directors have extensive board experience and bring a broad base of experience and skills to the boards on which they serve. In aggregate, they have been active board members in over 25 early stage companies and are well positioned to assist their portfolio companies in a number of key areas, including management team and CEO recruiting, business development, customer introductions, strategy development, additional funding, mergers and acquisitions, and exit considerations

Raman Khanna – Founding Managing Director

Raman Khanna is an experienced executive with over 27 years of experience in Internet infrastructure and enterprise computing. He has been involved with more than 25 start-ups in roles such as investor, Board of Director member and Advisory Board member.

Raman co-founded Diamondhead in June 2000 and has led the Firm’s investments in Cavium Networks (IPO in May 2007: CAVM), firstRain, Intraspect (acquired by Vignette), Nitronex, Orative (acquired by Cisco Systems), PassMark Security (acquired by RSA Security/EMC), Reactivity (acquired by Cisco Systems), and Serus.

Prior to 2000, Raman served as an advisor to many companies including Berkeley Networks (acquired by Fore Systems), Siara Networks (acquired by Redback), Terabeam, SupportSoft (IPO), Selectica (IPO), Mergent Systems (acquired by CommerceOne) and Portola Communications (acquired by Netscape). Raman also served on the board of directors of Entercept Security Technologies, acquired in May 2003 by McAfee for $120 million.

Prior to co-founding Diamondhead, Raman worked at Stanford University for 16 years in various roles, including Chief Information Officer (CIO), Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Executive Director of Computing and Communications. As Stanford’s CIO, Raman managed an organization of 450 professionals responsible for deploying and managing Stanford’s entire IT infrastructure and applications that support Stanford’s business and academic activities. During Raman’s tenure, Stanford University’s IT organization was well recognized as being an early adopter of new and emerging technologies. In addition, Raman formed and managed Stanford’s IT Industry Advisory Board which consisted of senior technologists and executives from leading technology organizations such as Cisco Systems, IBM, Oracle, and Sun Microsystems.

Raman was one of the early believers and adopters of the Internet and is also a central member of the Internet 2 project. Internet 2, the next generation of the Internet, is a consortium of 200+ universities working in partnership with industry and government to develop and deploy advanced network applications and technologies, accelerating the creation of tomorrow’s Internet. Raman has served on the Internet 2 Steering Committee and as a member of the Internet 2 Industry Strategy Council.

Raman is a charter member of The IndUS Entrepreneurs (TiE), a global network of primarily Indian entrepreneurs. He was a member of the Working Council for CIOs and other professional groups that brought together CIOs from large IT organizations. He has also served on Advisory Boards of global corporations such as Microsoft, Dell and Sun Microsystems.

Raman served as a contributing editor for four books on technology topics including networking, distributed computing, and collaboration. He has been a keynote speaker for the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) as well as a speaker at IBF conferences and industry events focusing on university spin-outs.

Raman earned an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering from Delhi University and Masters degrees in Computer Science from Virginia Tech and Business Administration from Golden Gate University.

David Lane – Founding Managing Director

David Lane has, for the past 22 years, created, built and financed information technology companies. During the past 20 years, he has directly managed venture capital funds totaling in excess of $2 Billion.

Prior to becoming a managing director of ONSET, David co-founded Diamondhead Ventures in June 2000 and has led the firm's investments in Danger Inc. (acquired by Microsoft), Entercept Security Technologies (acquired by McAfee), Truviso and UPEK.

Prior to Diamondhead Ventures, David was one of the senior venture capital investment officers at the Harvard Management Company, where he focused on making direct investments in seed to later stage opportunities in the information technology sector. During his investment career, David has sponsored more than 20 investments in the information technology software, semiconductor and services areas. Some of his prior venture capital investments include: Harmonic, Inc. (IPO), TriQuint Semiconductor (IPO), NexGen (IPO), Viewlogic Systems (IPO) and Harbridge Merchant Services (acquired by First Data Corporation).

At ONSET Ventures, David specializes in infrastructure software/SAAS, information security, healthcare IT, semiconductors and commercializing disruptive technologies developed at leading research universities.

David earned a B.S.E.E. degree from the University of Southern California and an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School. He serves on the University of Southern California Engineering School's Board of Counselors, the Engineering School Dean's industry advisory board as well as several non-profit boards.

Dr. Taher Elgamal – Venture Advisor

Taher has been a Venture Advisor with Diamondhead since 2003. He is a leading expert in computer, network and information security. Taher is currently the Chief Security Officer of Axway, was the Chief Technology Officer of Tumbleweed Communications, was the Founder/Chair of Securify, and was the former Chief Scientist of Netscape. He is recognized in the industry as the "inventor of SSL". He wrote the base algorithm used in SSL and helped establish SSL as the Internet Security standard within standard committees and within the industry.

Taher invented several industry and government standards in data security and digital signatures area including the DSS government standard for digital signatures. Several thousand publications have been written in the space referred to as “the Elgamal Cryptography”. He developed security software that was used in commercial products by approximately ten companies as well as in the DSS government standard for digital signatures.

Taher has public Board of Director experience with RSA Security, hi/fn, Phoenix Technology and Tumbleweed. He has a Ph.D. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.

Dr. Hector Garcia-Molina – Venture Advisor

Hector is a Venture Advisor with Diamondhead. He is the Leonard Bosack and Sandra Lerner Professor in the Departments of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. He was the Chairman of the Computer Science Department from January 2001 to December 2004.

Hector servers on the Board of Directors of Oracle Corporation and Kintera. In addition, he serves on the Technical Advisory Board of DoCoMo Labs USA and Yahoo Search & Marketplace.

From 1997 to 2001, he was a member the President’s Information Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC). Hector previously was on the faculty of the Computer Science Department at Princeton University. Google’s two Founders were Hector’s Ph.D. students and spun out of his laboratory at Stanford University to establish the company that today is Google.

Hector’s research interests include distributed computing systems, digital libraries and database systems. He has a Ph.D. in Computer Science and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.
